A 3-year postdoctoral position in tomato crop protection via biological control funded by the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO) via the European Research Area Network program C-IPM is available at the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED), University of Amsterdam, Netherlands. The Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics is one of the eight research institutes of the Faculty of Science of the UvA. IBED covers a wide range of subjects, in both fundamental and applied research. Our scientific studies aim at a better understanding of the dynamics of ecosystems at all relevant levels, from genes to climate change, using a truly multidisciplinary approach.

Project description

The aim of this project is to investigate to which extent biological control is hampered by plant defenses. Tomato plants are relatively resistant to herbivores due to a rich palette of defensive chemicals. Yet they suffer from a group of tomato-adapted pests that can only be controlled via biological control. However, biological control agents are hampered by the same plant-resistance traits as their prey either directly (via the plant) or indirectly (via their prey). In this project we will investigate how to combine plant resistance and biological control to obtain maximum levels of crop protection. The position will be based in the Molecular & Chemical Ecology lab of Associate professor M. Kant but will be co-supervised by Dr M. Montserrat in Malaga (Spain) where a substantial part of the greenhouse and field work will take place.


We are looking for a talented young scientist with a PhD in biological control-based crop protection having a solid background in arthropod community and behavioral ecology, in (plant-insect) molecular biology and is familiar with mathematical modeling of predator-prey interactions.

We envision a candidate who is familiar with common biological control practices and sampling strategies, who has experience in designing and executing behavioral and biological control experiments in the laboratory, greenhouse and field and who has hands-on experience with the use of molecular biology techniques such as gene expression analysis and DNA sequencing. The candidate must have a compelling publication record in international journals and an interest to work both independently and in teams. A substantial part of the work will be performed at the research station of the CSIC in Malaga (Spain) in conjunction with local growers and scientists. Hence the candidate must speak both English and Spanish fluently.

The starting date is flexible, but should preferably be no later than 15 August 2017. The full-time appointment will be on a temporary basis for a maximum period of 3 years (initial appointment will be for a period of 12 months and after satisfactory evaluation it can be extended with 2 years for a total duration of 3 years). The full-time gross monthly salary will range from €2,588 to €4,084 gross per month (salary scale 10), based on 38 hours per week. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable. The annual salary will be increased by 8 % holiday allowance and 8.3 % end-of-year bonus.
