Cultural Sociology (MSc Sociology)
Introduction
Culture in a narrow sense (the arts), popular culture (media, entertainment, fashion) and more broadly, collective mentalities and ideologies, religious orientations, expert and ordinary knowledge, moral opinions and feelings are topics addressed in Cultural Sociology. This programme takes a look at a variety of cultural phenomena from a sociological perspective. Culture is approached sociologically as rooter in, emerging from and impacting on social (economic, political) relations and group processes. Moreover, culture is conceived in dynamic terms, and viewed in the context of social changes.
Cultural Sociology trains students at a high academic level. It provides students with thorough knowledge of sociological concepts and theories with respect to culture in the broad sense. Students will gain knowledge of aspects of European cultural history in relation to social processes and insight into the functioning of cultural policy areas. Cultural Sociology students will gain the ability to use these concepts and theories in creative ways. The combination of empirical studies with theoretical reflection gives students the intellectual tools and skills they need to analyse and understand complex social and cultural issues.
For students interested in this field of study, we also offer a two-year Research Master’s.
Studying Cultural Sociology (MSc) at the University of Amsterdam
The university buildings that house the programme's staff and class rooms are located in Amsterdam's vibrant city centre, which offers a host of opportunities to explore a diversity of (sub)cultures and participate in all kinds of ‘high' (art museums, theatre, opera etc.) and popular culture.
Cultural sociology is a well-established and successful specialisation in the sociology programmes at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels, and an important field of research at the UvA. The programme's core staff are experienced scholars who combine teaching and research, investigate a variety of topics in cultural sociology (ranging from the sociology of humour to the dynamics of global art markets) and publish extensively.
As researchers they are part of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR). They have contacts with experts of the University of Amsterdam as well as other scholars in the Netherlands and abroad.

Accreditation and degree
Upon successful completion of Cultural Sociology, students receive a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Sociology (Sociologie).
