Classics (Classics and Ancient Civilizations)

In the Master's programme in Classics you will combine linguistics, literature and cultural history to study the language, literature and material culture of Ancient Greece and Rome.

Classics: languages and cultures of Greco-Roman Antiquity

The world of Greco-Roman Antiquity has many facets, which is why Classics embraces many disciplines. Students will be analysing representative primary sources much more in-depth than was the case during the Bachelor’s phase. Choosing their own areas of interest, students will be introduced to scholarly debates and learn to handle the academic instruments with which to contribute to relevant discussions. In addition, students will be shown how to apply their specialist, critical knowledge of Classical Antiquity to texts and other cultural phenomena from later periods.

Classics in Amsterdam

The university of Amsterdam has a long tradition of teaching and researching Latin and Greek. Doing a Master's in Classics in Amsterdam also has many other advantages. Greek tragedies are regularly performed in the many theatres the city houses. Amsterdam also has its own antiquities museum, the Allard Pierson Museum, which houses a special collection of artefacts from Egypt, as well as a large collection of ceramics, glass and bronzes from Greek and Roman Antiquity. The library of the Allard Pierson Museum has an important collection in the area of Classical Antiquity in the Netherlands and surrounding countries. The Museum is closely involved with ACASA's education. The department of Classics of the University of Amsterdam has an excellent research library with a large open stack, and the University Library (UB), which offers even more books.

The Master’s in Classics and Ancient Civilisations is jointly taught by the University of Amsterdam and the VU University Amsterdam via the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA). The Master’s programme Classics forms part of this joint programme. By pooling their resources in ACASA, the two Amsterdam-based universities offer the broadest package of Master’s programmes in the field of Classical Antiquity in the Netherlands.
